Steam Wishlists: What They Do and How to Measure Them
Reviewed against the linked Steamworks documentation. Steam can change its rules; the linked pages are authoritative.
Short answer: a Steam wishlist is a player saying "I am interested in this game", a bookmark, not a purchase. Steam can notify wishlisters when the game launches or gets a qualifying discount, but not every wishlister receives every notification. Valve says wishlists mostly do not drive algorithmic visibility, that there is no minimum wishlist count required for visibility and that there is no accurate formula for predicting sales from wishlists.
This guide separates what Valve's Steamworks documentation says from our own suggestions (Our advice, opinion). Cited Steamworks statements are either requirements (Steam rule, linked) or official recommendations and information (Steam guidance, linked); not every official statement is a requirement. It contains no conversion benchmarks: we do not have honest universal ones, and neither does Valve's documentation.
1. What a wishlist does
- Steam guidance Players wishlist a game to show interest and to be told about it later (Steamworks: wishlists).
- Steam guidance Steam can notify wishlisters when the game is released and when it gets a qualifying discount. Delivery depends on the player, for example a verified email, their notification preferences and cooldowns, so a wishlist is not a guaranteed message (wishlists).
- Steam guidance A public Coming Soon page can collect wishlists before release (wishlists).
- Steam guidance The wishlist report in Steamworks tracks wishlist additions, purchases and deletions (wishlists).
- Steam guidance No minimum wishlist count is required for visibility, and there is no accurate formula that predicts sales from wishlists (wishlists).
2. Do wishlists affect Steam visibility?
- Steam guidance Mostly not. Wishlists are not a general algorithmic visibility factor; exceptions are limited, for example the Popular Upcoming list (Steamworks: visibility on Steam).
- Steam guidance Store page visits and purchase conversion rate are not visibility factors either. Purchases and play are what Valve points to (visibility on Steam).
So a wishlist campaign is not a way to buy ranking. Wishlists are still useful: they are people who asked to hear about your game, and the notifications above can reach some of them at launch or during a qualifying discount.
3. Two different "wishlist conversion rates"
People use "wishlist conversion rate" for two unrelated numbers. Name which one you mean, and always write down the denominator and the time window next to the result.
| Measure | Numerator / denominator | Define and watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor-to-wishlist (one campaign) | Wishlists attributed to one UTM campaign link / Tracked visits from that link, same period. | Steam reports Total, Trusted and Tracked visits, and they differ. Only Tracked visits from logged-in users are eligible for conversion attribution, and wishlists, purchases and activations are attributed within 72 hours of the visit. Cookie and cross-device gaps mean some conversions are missed (Steamworks: UTM analytics). |
| Wishlist-to-purchase (one cohort) | Purchases from a defined group of wishlists / the wishlists in that group. | Fix the cohort (for example, wishlists added before release) and the window you count purchases in, then keep both the same when you compare. Use the wishlist report, which tracks additions, purchases and deletions (wishlists). |
- Our advice Do not divide all of your wishlist additions by one campaign's Tracked visits. Most of those wishlists did not come from that campaign, so the result is not a conversion rate.
- Our advice Compare your numbers with your own earlier numbers, measured the same way. A rate quoted for another game used another audience, price, window and definition.
- Our advice Treat a single campaign or a small cohort as a rough signal. A handful of wishlists can swing the rate a lot.
4. A practical page checklist
These items make the page easier to understand at a glance. The Steam rule items are Steam requirements, the Steam guidance items are Steamworks recommendations rather than upload requirements, and the Our advice items are our opinion. None of them is a proven wishlist uplift, and we make no such claim.
Capsule
- Steam rule Upload the store capsules at the Steamworks sizes: header 920x430, small 462x174, main 1232x706, vertical 748x896 (graphical assets). Full table: Steam capsule art size.
- Steam rule Base capsules show only artwork, the game name and an official subtitle: no taglines, review quotes, awards or calls to action such as "wishlist now" (asset rules).
- Our advice The name stays readable and the genre is guessable at the small display sizes. Self-review steps: capsule art feedback.
Short description
- Steam guidance A short synopsis that tells players the genre and what makes the game unique (store page description).
- Our advice The first sentence says what the player does, not a mood line that would fit any game.
Screenshots
- Steam rule At least 5 gameplay screenshots, 1920x1080 or larger, 16:9 (graphical assets).
- Our advice Put the core activity first and make the first few show different situations.
Tags
- Steam guidance Put the most relevant, specific tags in your top 5 (Steam tags).
- Our advice Compare with genuinely similar games and move generic tags below descriptive ones.
Measurement
- Our advice Give every external link its own UTM campaign, so each one gets its own Tracked visits and attributed wishlists (UTM analytics).
- Our advice Before you change the page, write down the current numbers, the date and what you changed. Change one thing at a time where you can, and remember that festivals, discounts and press can move the same numbers.
- Our advice Watch wishlist deletions as well as additions in the wishlist report.
What this guide does not claim
It does not predict wishlists, conversion or sales, and it gives no benchmark or formula, because Valve says no accurate sales formula exists. Clearer pages are our advice, not a measured uplift. The full checklist for the rest of the page is the Steam store page checklist.
FAQ
What is a Steam wishlist?
A wishlist entry is a player telling Steam they are interested in a game, a bookmark they can come back to. It is a signal of interest, not a purchase or a pre-order.
Does Steam notify players who wishlisted my game?
Steam can notify wishlisters when the game launches and when it gets a qualifying discount. Whether a given player receives a notification depends on things such as a verified email, their notification preferences and Steam's cooldowns, so not every wishlister is reached every time.
Do more wishlists make Steam show my game to more people?
Mostly no, according to Valve's visibility documentation: wishlists are not a general algorithmic visibility factor, with limited exceptions such as the Popular Upcoming list. Valve points to purchases and play instead. Valve also says there is no minimum wishlist count required for visibility.
What is a good Steam wishlist conversion rate?
We do not publish a benchmark, because there is no honest universal one. Valve says there is no accurate formula for predicting sales from wishlists. Track your own visitor-to-wishlist and wishlist-to-purchase rates, write down the denominator and time window each time, and compare them with your own earlier numbers.
How do I measure visitor-to-wishlist conversion for a campaign?
Use a Steam UTM link for that campaign and divide the wishlists attributed to it by its Tracked visits for the same period. Only Tracked visits from logged-in users are eligible for attribution, and cookie and cross-device gaps mean some wishlists are missed. Do not divide all wishlist additions by one campaign's visits.
Is purchase conversion rate a Steam ranking factor?
No. Valve's visibility documentation says store page visits and purchase conversion rate are not visibility factors. Measure conversion to understand your own page and campaigns, not to chase a ranking.
Will the $29 pack increase my wishlists?
We do not claim that. The pack reviews how clearly your capsules, screenshots and text present the game. That review has not been validated against wishlists or sales.
Check your own page
Run the free structure check on your Steam page (tags, screenshot count and resolution, trailer, About structure, languages, OS; it does not look at images). The optional $29 one-time pack adds an AI review of your actual capsules, screenshots and text on a published rubric. It is a clarity review, not a wishlist or sales forecast.
